The Weather. The People. The Location. Driving. Links. Contact Us. A winter in Newfoundland from an Australian perspective

We have lived on our sailing yacht, Sunflower, since 2003.  We decided that it was time for a new adventure during the northern winter. In December 2011 we  left our sailing boat,Sunflower, in a marina in Northern Cyprus and travelled to St Johns, Newfoundland to spend three months experiencing a Newfoundland winter.

There is not much snow in Australia and even though Dee is a native Londoner neither of us had experienced true snow conditions or a “white Christmas”.  Our friends said we were mad…oh well….they say that about us a lot….

We were fortunate to locate a wonderful cottage for the winter, in the small community of Dunfield, about 2 1/2 hours drive from St Johns.

Newfoundland does have a reputation for frequent heavy fog in summer but not in winter.

Winter was sunny days and very pleasant with an occasional snow blizzard!
Dee’s mother was born in Newfoundland and emigrated to the UK in 1939.

We had  spent a week in Newfoundland about 15 years ago, we had met some fantastic people then.......
We wanted to be in a smaller community rather than in a major town or city.

After much Internet searching of many standard holiday-houses we finally found Spurrell’s Heritage Home in the small village of Dunfield.
